Who is Mel Thijssen?
– I’m a 23-year-old professional show jumper from the Netherlands who has a big passion, and love, for horses and the sport!
When did you start riding, and do you remember what it was like when you first began?
– I started riding at a very early age! But I started riding competitively at the age of seven. It all started very innocently. My parents bought a sweet pony for us to play with in our backyard field. I always played with the pony, just brushing and cuddling it at first, but as time passed, I also started riding and never quit after that.
What led you to focus on show jumping?
– My dad is a professional show jumper as well. So, I always had a preference for show jumping. Plus, I like the excitement and action!
How has having siblings who also compete in show jumping influenced your experience in the sport? What are the positive aspects?
– I think a big plus of having siblings competing with, or against, you in the same sport is that you have someone close to you to relate to. We are all our own individuals with ideas, riding styles, etc. But you can always ask each other for help, advice, or opinions.
What have you learned from each other?
– I think the most important lesson I’ve learned is to take each other's advice and turn it into your own vision. We are all very much alike but still so different.
“As a rider, you should always be willing to learn more and more.”
– Mel Thijssen
Have you ever had a horse that challenged you in unexpected ways? How did this experience shape your riding?
– I think Florida Balia has challenged me a lot! When I first got to ride her, I wasn’t sure how to manage her, as I wasn’t really used to such sensitive horses. She taught me to trust myself and the horse to make a strong connection!
What keeps you motivated in this sport?
– The horses! I love the horses and being able to show everyone their potential – whether there is a limit to their abilities or not. They are always the perfect horse for someone.
What do you think are the most important qualities of a successful show jumper, both in terms of the rider and the horse?
– I think the most important quality, for both rider and horse, is a desire to learn. As a rider, you should always be willing to learn more and more. I believe that’s the key to becoming a good rider and essential for good horsemanship! Same thing goes for the horses. A horse who is excited to learn will always be able to grow to a certain level.
“I’m very excited to be working together with Maya Delorez as they have the best, most stylish, and especially the most comfortable riding gear!”
– Mel Thijssen
What is your typical day like?
– My typical day basically consists of riding! I begin my day at the stable at 7:45 and start riding straight away. Most days, I finish riding around 17:00. In between riding sessions, I take care of my horse with the help of my groom.
What is your long-term goal in equestrian sports?
– My long-term goal is to reach the highest level of the sport by being the best horseman I can be.
Which are your favorite MD products?
– My favorite MD product is definitely the Compression Breeches! They are so nice, stretchy, and comfortable. A real must-have!
